REEEP Activities
REEEP is active globally, but has a specific interest in countries in the developing world and emerging economies.
REEEP believes this is where its activities can have the biggest impact in ensuring that developing country energy systems do not follow the high-carbon emission route of the developed world.
REEEP initiates and funds clean energy projects
REEEP conducts regular programme funding cycles every 12-18 months, funding targeted interventions in the two specific areas that offer the greatest potential for developing the market for sustainable energy:
- assisting governments in creating favourable regulatory and policy frameworks
- promoting innovative finance and business models to activate the private sector
REEEP selects projects which can be replicated and scaled-up, and have a real impact on the development of the market for renewable and efficient energy and innovation. In the eight programme cycles to date, the partnership has offered funding to 150 projects in more than 65 countries, primarily in the emerging markets and the developing world.
REEEP develops and supports policy-maker networks
EEC
The Efficiency Coalition (EEC) is a network of stakeholders stablished by REEEP to help draw together initiatives in the diverse energy efficiency field and to promote real action on the ground. Its priority area of focus is on buildings, which account for 40% of world energy use, according to the WBCSD Energy Efficiency in Buildings project.
In Spring 2009, the EEC brought together the major energy efficiency stakeholders in Mexico to sign a joint MoU committing the organisations to the development of a joint action plan to implement energy efficiency in buildings at state and municipal level across Mexico. The signatories include the The National Commission for Energy Efficiency (CONUEE), the National Network of State Energy Commission (RENACE), and the Association for Energy Efficiency in Buildings (AEAEE).
REIL
In collaboration with Yale University (USA), REEEP supports The Renewable Energy and International Law (REIL) sub-network of legal and technical experts in providing analysis of the barriers and opportunities in international law.
SERN
To facilitate sharing amongst regulators on policy and regulatory mechanisms, REEEP supports the Sustainable Energy Regulation Network, which is comprised of regulatory bodies, government departments, energy companies, NGOs and researchers. This initiative is done in collaboration with Warwick University (UK).
REEEP disseminates and replicates learnings
REEEP provides and/or supports a wide range of online tools, news items, publications, its website and events.
Events
REEEP supports awareness-raising events at senior stakeholder level, attends numerous renewable energy and and energy efficiency events around the world as participant and as speaker. It also holds an annual senior level conference at Wilton Park in England to discuss current questions on accelerating renewables and energy efficiency in a development context. A bi-weekly listing of relevant green energy events around the world is circulated to all Partners and Friends of REEEP who opt for electronic communication.
Toolkits
Project outcomes of REEEP projects are made publically available online. A toolkit website forms a valuable resource for project developers and other stakeholders.
REEEP website and newsletter
REEEP keeps in regular contact with its Partners and Friends via a monthly NewsREEEP which highlights project successes and other REEEP-related developments.
reegle
reegle (with a lower-case r) is a search engine designed to provide easy access to the world’s best databases and information on renewable energy and energy efficiency, by only accessing those data sources with the most accurate and up-to-date information. It was developed by REEEP in collaboration with REN21, and was funded by the governments of Germany, Netherlands, United Kingdom. www.reegle.info
RETScreen
REEEP supports the clean energy project analysis tool www.retscreen.net, which seeks to build the capacity of planners, decision-makers and industry to implement renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. It is made publically available free of charge by the Canadian government, and REEEP has helped support its translation into 35 languages.
REEEP is an active actor on the international stage
REEEP works closely with other NGOs, regional agencies, development banks and international organisations such as the UN and the World Bank to promote the importance of energy efficiency and renewables. Through the United Nations, REEEP is active within the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD) process.
To minimise duplication of effort, the partnership has collaboration agreements with GVEP, GNESD,CLASP, ICLEI, EEP and MEDREP, and is working closely with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as its work programme takes form.
REEEP has observer status at all key UNFCCC events including the annual COP meetings, and is a guest of the APEC Energy Working Group. REEEP has been recognised as a delivery mechanism by the G8, at the Gleneagles, St. Petersburg and Heiligendamm summits. The organisation is specifically mandated by the G8 to support energy efficiency in buildings.
