Diplomatic activities
REEEP uses its regional secretariats, its local focal points, and the diplomatic resources of its partners to maximise its international impact and output. REEEP is particularly keen to encourage governments, both at a national and local level, to become active members of the partnership.
Governments are crucial to the clean energy transformation
Governments are important to REEEP because they have such a vital role to play in the uptake of renewable energy and in promoting energy efficiency. It is governments who:
- determine the legal framework and policies
- are often the majority owners of the energy sector
- are themselves often amongst the largest end consumers of energy
The low-carbon energy transformation that REEEP supports can only be achieved with governments taking the lead in bringing together business and industry, civil sociey and individuals to tackle the climate and energy issues.
Currently 46 governments are Partners of REEEP: Angola, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Kerala, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nepal, Norway, the Philippines, Romania, Senegal, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sri Lanka, St. Lucia, Switzerland, Tonga, Tunisia, Tuvalu, the United Kingdom, the United States, Vanuatu and Yemen. The European Commission is also a member.
We believe that by encouraging both national and local governments to join REEEP, they can signal their intent to act as the keystone in the bridge to sustainable energy.
REEEP is an active actor on the international stage
As a vocal advocate of energy efficiency and renewable energy, REEEP complements the efforts of its government Partners on the international stage in numerous ways:
- Through the United Nations, REEEP is active within the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD) process.
- REEEP has observer status at all key UNFCCC events including the annual COP meetings, and is a guest of the APEC Energy Working Group.
- REEEP has been recognised as a delivery mechanism by the G8, at the Gleneagles, St. Petersburg and Heiligendamm summits. The organisation is specifically mandated by the G8 to support energy efficiency in buildings.
- REEEP works closely with other NGOs, regional agencies, development banks and international organisations such as the UN and the World Bank to promote the importance of energy efficiency and renewables.
- The partnership has collaboration agreements with GVEP, GNESD,CLASP, ICLEI,EEP and MEDREP, and is working closely with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as its work programme takes form.
