Description: NERC is an Independent Utility Regulator for the Electricity Sector in Nigeria. It was established in 2005 and has the primary mandate of ensuring the orderly development of the Nigerian Electricty Industry through Regulations.

NERC's main objects and functions are as follows:
- To create, promote, and preserve effecient industry and market structures, and to ensure the optimal utilisation of resources for the provision of electricity services;
- To maximize access to electricity services, by promoting and facilitating consumer connections to rural and urban areas;
- To ensure that prices charged by licensees are fair to consumers and are sufficient to allow licensees to finance their activities and to allow for a reasonble earnings for effecient operations;
- To ensure the safety, security, reliability and quality of service in the production and delivery of electricity to consumers;
- To promote competition and private sector participation, when and where feasible;
- To license and regulate persons engaged in the generation, transmission, system operation, distribution, and trading of electricity

In pursuance of these objects and functions, NERC has adopted the following vision, mission and motto:

Mission : Promote and ensure an investor-friendly industry and effecient market structure to meet the needs of Nigeria for safe, adequate, reliable and affordable electricity

Focus and activities:

In order to achieve its objectives, NERC has developed a 5 years Strategic Plan for the year 2009-2013. The Strategic Plan focuses on 4 major goals namely: - Uninterrupted Electricity - Private Sector Participation - Consumer Protection - Fair Regulation Specifically, NERC is working on establishing a regulatory framework for the development of power stations using renewable sources. This will help in improving access to electricty sources and diversifying fuel sources for power plants with emphasis on cleaner energy sources. In addition, NERC is also developing a framework for loss reduction standards as well as energy effeciency and demand-side management.
