SOCIALCARBON® Standard

  SOCIALCARBON Standard logo
Name: SOCIALCARBON® Standard
Official Abbreviation: SOCIALCARBON
Description: SOCIALCARBON is an add-on standard adept at bringing demonstrable social, environmental and economic benefits to stakeholders involved in carbon projects. The Ecologica Institute (EI), a Brazilian non-profit organization focused on climate change mitigation, conservation and community development, created SOCIALCARBON in 2000. SOCIALCARBON itself does not include specific criteria for emissions reductions such as baseline and monitoring methodologies. Therefore, it is always used in conjunction with another carbon offset standard (e.g. VCS, CDM, CAR, etc).

SOCIALCARBON may be adapted to suit different types of projects, including hydropower plants, landfills, fuel switching, forestry and others. Its theoretical framework is based on the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA), a worldwide methodology used to plan development activities and assess the contribution of existing activities to sustaining livelihoods.

The Standard measures individually six aspects of project sustainability using the SOCIALCARBON hexagon: carbon, biodiversity, social, financial, human and natural.
Focus and activities:

Co-benefits standard for the voluntary carbon market, applicable to projects in fuel-switching, forestry, hydropower and others. Assesses projects' contributions to sustainable development.
