Kyrgyzstan joins REEEP
Bishkek, 17.06.2008 - written by: Press Service of the Ministry for Industry, Energy and Fuel Resources of Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan became a formal partner of the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). Kyrgyzstan is the 37th country to become a partner of the REEEP, an international public-private partnership that promotes policies and financial mechanisms in support of renewable energy and energy efficiency.
The Kyrgyz Ministry for Industry, Energy and Fuel Resources will act as the Kyrgyz government’s representative to REEEP.
Kyrgyzstan intends to implement the potential of alternative energy sources, such as solar and wind as much as possible. Kyrgyzstan is interested in cooperation with neighbouring countries in order to utilize their experiences and front line achievements in the area of development programmes for renewable energy and energy efficiency.
Effective energy efficiency and renewable resource use is crucial for the sustainable development of Kyrgyzstan in the 21st century. The country will make a step-by-step transition from extensive fossil fuel energy usage towards a portfolio of energy sources that includes renewable resources.
Currently renewable energy represents 0.06% of Kyrgyzstan’s total energy supply.
Kyrgyzstan’s REEEP membership is another example of its plans for improved energy security and reduced dependence on fossil fuels. Establishing international cooperation links with REEEP will allow increased development of renewable energy sources and also the ability to share experiences with neighbouring countries.
