IRENA and REEEP meet in Vienna

Vienna, 02.10.2009 - REEEP International Secretariat

The Directors General of IRENA and REEEP met in Vienna on Monday, 28 September for a first face-to-face discussion on collaboration between the two organisations. The meeting between Mrs. Hélène Pelosse and Marianne Osterkorn was wide-ranging, but focussed particularly on IRENA’s immediate challenge of setting up structures, on lessons learned from REEEP’s experience in clean energy projects, and on how the reegle search engine platform could be a focus of cooperation in information sharing.

“We warmly welcome the establishment of IRENA.  As an intergovernmental organisation, we think that IRENA will be able to influence governments directly, both in their function as policy-drivers and as the majority owners of the energy sector in most countries.  This will be a great help in moving renewable energy forward,”  said Marianne Osterkorn.

Following this meeting, REEEP also attended a workshop on knowledge management in Berlin, and a capacity-building workshop in Abu Dhabi on October 14.  “Members engaged in constructive debates and displayed strong commitment to IRENA’s future activities. I feel that there is a lot of common ground for the work of IRENA,” said Hélène Pelosse, following the Abu Dhabi meeting.
