REEEP Programme Board meets in China for first time

On 11th October, REEEP’s Programme Board held its first ever meeting in China, at the Shangri-La Hotel in Beijing. The meeting was opened by Mr Han Wenke, Director General of Energy Research Institute and member of the high level National Energy Consultative Committee on behalf of the Chinese government. He welcomed all the REEEP Programme Board members to China and underlined Chinese appreciation for the support given by REEEP to clean energy initiatives in the country. He also highlighted the current and planned efforts by Government of China in renewable energy and energy efficiency, and expressed a desire to continue and to intensify the close cooperation between REEEP and China.

The Programme Board meeting, which is the REEEP body responsible for oversight of the project programme, covered a wide range of topics, including updates from each of the Region, operational technical issues, and a discussion on the methodologies for measuring the impact of REEEP projects.

In the course of the meeting, several REEEP partners presented their projects, associated activities and outputs.

  • Centre for Renewable Energy Development (CRED) presented the project “30% Renewable Energy Penetration in China by 2030”;
  • National Light Testing Centre (NLTC) presented the project “Technical Quality Assurance for LED Lighting in China”;
  • PV and Wind Power Systems Quality Test Centre presented the project “Roadmap for Small Wind Power in China”.

Following the Programme Board meeting, members were invited to tour the Solar Valley in Dezhou, a prefecture-level city in northwestern Shandong province.  Driven by the efforts of Huang Ming, the CEO of Himin Solar, this area has become both an R&D center and a showplace eco-friendly solar community which was the venue for the 2010 International Solar City Congress.
