Osterkorn: Middle East holds vast RE potential
Dubai, 08.02.2011 - REEEP International Secretariat
Speaking to the Middle East Electricity Leaders Forum in the Dubai Exhibition Centre, Dr. Marianne Osterkorn pointed out that “the region offers vast untapped potential in renewable energy, particularly solar.” She was addressing the gathering of 350 energy stakeholders drawn from the Middle East and North Africa.
The day’s agenda was divided into two broad categories. The morning session covered Smart City and included extended discussions on smart grids and low carbon city planning. The afternoon examined Smart Energy, a session in which Dr. Alessandro Clerici, WEC Chair of Activity Area Survey of Energy Resources and Technologies looked more specifically at the pivot role of energy efficiency, and where Dr. Osterkorn highlighted how renewables and EE fit into fossil fuel based electricity systems.
