At the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of the Gleneagles-Dialogue on Climate Change, Clean Energy and Sustainable Development in Berlin on September 10th, the REEEP had the opportunity to voice the importance of energy efficiency together with other representatives of civil society.

At the Heiligendamm Summit, G8 leaders called on all UNFCCC parties to actively and constructively participate in the Bali Conference in December 2007 with a view to achieving a comprehensive post-2012 agreement that should include all major economies to be concluded by 2009.  To support progress on both the international and the national levels, the Gleneagles Dialogue has been initiated in 2005 to address the strategic challenge of transforming our energy systems to create a more secure and sustainable future.

The global potential for energy savings is enormous.  A massive improvement of energy efficiency should be at the heart of any strategy to tackle climate change and simultaneously to improve energy security.  According to the IEA increasing energy efficiency could contribute up to 80% of avoided greenhouse gases while at the same time substantially lowering energy costs.
