Description:
Towards an Integrated Energy Agenda Beyond 2020: Securing Sustainable Policies and Investments.
The development of a sustainable, long-term solution to meeting the world’s energy needs is a defining issue of our time. Energy is directly linked with the key global challenges that the world faces - poverty alleviation, climate change, and global, environmental and food security.
The global economy recession has already affected most of the developed countries’ markets and spread into many emerging and developing economies. The global financial and economic turmoil was preceded by a period of dramatic surge followed by volatility in food and fuel prices, rapidly undoing the modest gains that have been achieved in poverty reduction in the world’s most vulnerable economies and impeding economic development in all regions. The most pressing global challenges such as energy and climate change will now have to be addressed in an increasingly fragile macroeconomic context, especially in poor developing countries.
The financial stress and the global economic slowdown will inevitably have severe implications for poverty eradication programmes, aid flows, levels of production and employment, food security, and domestic, regional and global security in general. But, as dramatic as it is, the current economic turmoil could also be a great opportunity for governments and business to create new markets and enable global “green growth”.
The objective of the conference is to provide a platform for policymakers, private sector and civil society representatives from developing and industrialized countries to discuss energy issues and related development risks in the context of the current global financial and economic crisis, stressing the need for increased international cooperation and highlighting the role which the United Nations system can play in the field of energy.
