Update on Status of Compendium of Best Practices

Washington, DC, 22.09.2009 - REEEP North American Secretariat

In order to address climate change and growing energy demands in developing nations, the REEEP North American Secretariat is spearheading an important project to collect U.S.

The most innovative and successful sub-national practices will be highlighted in a Compendium of Best Practices, to provide a resource of replicable models for China , India, and other developing countries.

The Compendium of Best Practices is being developed with funding and support from the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, and the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). Best practices are being collecting by the Alliance to Save Energy, and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE).
The project is timely because:
• There’s a need for building the policy and regulatory groundwork that will pave the way to new technologies’ success. The Compendium will build the groundwork that will enable us to move forward with developing clean and efficient energy;
• At present, two global trends which are reshaping development and foreign policy dynamics are apparent: (1) rapid urbanization, (2) devolution of economic and political power to sub-national levels such as municipalities and other local entities;
• In light of these shifts, the U.S. would like to support and encourage dialogues to accommodate local players and local needs;
• Innovation is happening at the city level. Cities have demonstrated great amounts of activity, enthusiasm, creativity in the adoption of energy efficiency and renewable energy;
• The Compendium is one important mechanism to fill the gap and need at the local level by bringing those shining and innovative examples to light.

Status of Project
• Research is being conducted to identify the U.S. local-level Best Practices. A website survey was developed, and more than 60 submissions have been received.
• The Compendium Advisory Committee will meet on September 24 to review the first draft of chosen Best Practices.
• An event at Yale University will be organized for early 2010 to share the Best Practices with an international audience and other interested in the findings.
