Huang Ming wins ‘alternative Nobel Prize’

The founder of Himin Solar, Huang Ming has been named one of the four winners of the 2011 Right Livelihood Awards, known informally as the alternative Nobel prize. According to the Swedish-based foundation that gives the award, he was honored for “his outstanding success in the development and mass-deployment of cutting-edge technologies for harnessing solar energy, thereby showing how dynamic emerging economies can contribute to resolving the global crisis of anthropogenic climate change.”

REEEP calls for project proposals in new €4.5 million 8th funding cycle

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) has opened its 8th programme cycle with a call for proposed clean energy projects targeting Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa.  The Partnership expects to fund approximately 30 projects with €4.5 million contributed by the Governments of the United Kingdom and Norway. The level of funding available per project has been increased by 50% to €150,000.

Unique EE training programme targets China’s design professionals

The World Bank estimates that by 2015, half of the world’s new building construction will take place in China.  The nation’s eleventh five-year plan (2005-2010) aims for a 50% reduction in building energy consumption, and related new policy measures include energy efficiency (EE) standards and labeling for buildings.  But there is still a strong need for capacity-building in energy efficiency-oriented design and technology for the design and construction professionals who make new development happen on the ground.

New 'Compendium of Best U.S. Practices' in RE and EE aims to drive deployment worldwide

Three leading energy efficiency and renewable energy organizations – the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP, an international body), the Alliance to Save Energy (Alliance) and the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) – have jointly released their Compendium of Best Practices: Sharing Local and State Successes in Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy from the United States, in which state and local governments share the key elements of their programs, lessons learned and what made each program a success.
