Hande wins 2011 Magsaysay Award

Harish Hande, the co-founder of SELCO Solar Light Pty. Ltd has been named one of the five individuals and one organisation to win the 2011 Ramon Magsaysay Award. Established in 1957, this award is Asia’s highest honor and is widely regarded as the region’s equivalent of the Nobel Prize.

REEEP eases financial crisis for RE and EE

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) has provided € 667,500 in seed funding for eight new finance projects to accelerate the clean energy market in the developing world. Piloting innovative finance methods is one of the Vienna-based NGO’s key priorities in its small-scale project funding, designed to have a wide ripple effect.

More farmers trade crops for solar lighting: a project scales up

Thanks to a REEEP project, cash-poor Pacific island villagers who often have no access to banking systems are able to trade cassava, dalo, bananas and other crops as payments for an LED solar lighting system to replace kerosene lanterns. This also leads to a considerable savings in fuel costs: in the Solomon Islands, kerosene will cost a typical household the equivalent of about €0.63 per day, while the value of the crops traded for solar LED amounts to less than half that, at €0.28 per day.

This is the message in seven encouraging case studies from SELCO India, a REEEP partner that has used funding to remove financial barriers and test finance and product innovation at the grassroots level. In the process, it has refuted many general assumptions about the affordability of renewable energy services targeted at the poor.
